Question: Dear Luise: I am a new mother and I’d sure like some holistic remedies to use in raising my family. Do you have any ideas, say for diarrhea, that you grew up with that work? I don’t want to be running to the doctor all the time because I think a lot of what they do is counterproductive. I was raised pretty much in “the doctor’s always right” mentality, and it served me well, but I’d like to take a step back with my kids. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Marlene
Answer: Dear Marlene: I remember my mother boiling my drinking water and she kept me on clear liquids like chicken broth and Jello when I had diarrhea. No dairy! Unfortunately, I raised my own family very much like your mother raised you, and relied heavily on medical attention and prescriptions. I’m a nurse, so it seemed like the natural thing to do.
Now, I’ve come to agree with you that we can over-prescribe and under treat. Common sense and the old-time remedies holistic doctors offer are a much better way to balance the body in many cases. I feel there’s room for the surgeon and the specialist with his prescription pad, but they aren’t the only game in town any more.
I called my naturopath regarding your question and she gave me several natural cures for diarrhea that you might want to print out and keep. However, I think some of them would be hard to get down kids. These are all accompanied with the admonition to drink lots of sterile or filtered water and/or soothing teas like Slippery Elm, Peppermint and Camomile.
1. Eat only white, toasted bread.
2. Mix sauerkraut juice with tomato juice, half and half, and take a tablespoon once an hour.
3. Mix one part cabbage juice to three parts sterile water. Drink 6 oz. every two hours.
4. Eat only green apples without the skins.
5. Eat only brown rice.
6. Stay on clear liquids for three days.
There are a few I feel children might be unwilling to try. I can also see that the idea is often to eat only one thing…a very simple way to rest the intestines.
In addition, you can order Kevin Trudeau’s wonderful book, “Natural Cures”. It’s the best resource I’ve seen for holistic home remedies.
