Should I Try to Work things Out

Question: Dear Luise: My brother in law’s wife has been mean to me since we met. Now it has been one year that I haven’t talked to her or attended holidays functions. It’s because of her and she knows that. She left me a message telling me to call her back. But I got busy and didn’t call her until two weeks later. I left her a message and she never called back. Now it has been one year since then and I don’t know what to do. I know that this is hard for my in-laws, husband and brother-in-law. There are kids included, too. Now my question is, do I try to contact them and try to work things out or should I just leave it as it is? Thank you. I.

Answer: Dear I. These things happen and for the good of all concerned it’s usually best to work them out.

When you are having serious difficulties with someone and they make a gesture by calling you, it is probably not wise to “get busy” and put off responding for two weeks. There is a silent message in that kind of behavior. And now it’s a year later.

“Better late than never.” I just wouldn’t leave it like it is. It’s a mess. Do your best to approach her and apologize for not getting back to her right away. See if it’s possible to get on better terms with her. The whole family will appreciate your making the effort. Blessings, Luise
