Making a Difference
Question: Dear Luise: I would like to take a more affirmative stance regarding creating peace on the planet. How can I find a way to make myself more useful and feel a greater sense of purpose? I’m a clinical therapist and in my practice I reach a small number of people. However, I feel that what I am doing is on such a miniscule scale as to make no appreciable difference at all in the bigger picture. I feel my days ticking away and wonder if I am doing what I am supposed to be doing, and if it is enough. My unrest is pretty vague but at the same time, ever-present. John
Answer: Dear John: You are well trained and have a great deal of learned information and techniques that exceed mine. I’m coming from a long life and the innate wisdom that naturally accumulates from that, if we let it. So, anything I have to offer you beyond what you already know would involve the “Mom-stuff” that I am more than willing to share. If that’s what’ you’re looking for, simplicity and clarity, and that’s why you wrote to me, then we’re on the same page.
It is natural to want to leave a mark on the planet…the ”John was here” kind of thing that will reassure you that your life wasn’t pointless. “Making a difference” has almost become a mantra to many over the last two decades. I would like to suggest that we approach making a difference in a way that provides a subtle difference. What if all of us could just trust that we already matter and that “of course we make a difference!” If that weight, that very common and very real sense of responsibility could be lifted, we would be free to do just that. The truth, as I see it, is that we don’t know and probably aren’t supposed to know when and where we make significant contributions to others. Sometimes a chance word or even a smile saves a soul. Bring your focus into making a difference with yourself. Bring yourself peace and joy and it becomes contagious. I sincerely believe that’s the way to change the world. Each of us needs to do that, in tiny ways, millions of times, all over the world to change the planet. It’s nobody’s job because it’s everyone’s. Blessings, Luise
