You will have to check with the manufacturer since VINS were only implemented since 1981. Hope that helps!

Vehicle Identification Number program was initiated by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1980 as a way to standardize car serial numbers. Cars built before 1981 don't follow a universal standard and thus require manufacturer-specific information to decode.

All we have learned here is to remove any paint on the hitch and sand off any rust and it may be stamped there.

Many people have found their VIN by carefully sanding the tongue. The number is often imprinted there. If you are successful...take that number to your department of licensing for a lost title.

I have a 1955 Pathfinder camper that was manufactured in Spencer Wisconin. I found the vin number on the right side of the hitch on the top of the frame. All that I found was the numbers "55" a small space and the numbers "1285". The numbers are about 1 inch high. The "55" is the year 19"55" and the "1285" is the actual number that this camper was in line as it was manufactured. Meaning that the camper that was manufactured before this one was stamped "55" "1284". There will not be a long vin number like on cars today and I have been told that these are the only numbers that were stamped on the campers. Let me know if I can be of any more help.

I have been told that people have found the VIN number on the tongue of vintage travel trailers under many coats of paint and/or rust. Some have used a sandblaster or sandpaper to help them find the imprint. Hope this helps. Blessings, Luise

We just bought a 1951 Shasta with no paperwork except the bill of sale from most recent owner. DMV said I need to find the VIN in order to register it. I have looked high and low and can't seem to locate it. If you have any info please let me know. Thanks. B.

They are all over the place as I understand it. No industry standard, originally. Some have found
VINs on the tongue and some never find one anywhere. Good luck! Luise

We bought an older camper that came w/ no paper work. DMV said to register it we need to start by finding the VIN #. We've looked but can't find one. We don't know what make it is or how old it is. Any idea where they hide the numbers? Thanks, K.

I have a 1986 31 ft. Pace Arrow & recently tried to reg. in Calif. DMV cannot find the vin#. We looked everywhere, doors, under hood, all cabinet doors & on the engine. Seems in other states the serial number is sufficent. Other than the manufacturer, how can we find the vin number?

Thanks in advance, Michael
