Question: Dear Luise: There is something weird happening to me at school. My teacher stares at me a lot and makes eye contact with me. It’s so uncomfortable. He even told us he’s married. He usually stands in other side of classroom and stares at me. I just ignore him. But this keeps going on and on every day. I don’t know why he stares at me. Please help me. What should I do? Thanks. S.
Answer: Dear S. This is a situation that is hard to resolve because you don’t know if he is doing it on purpose or not. He has to look someplace…and maybe he is just looking in your general direction.
I think the first thing I would try would be to ask him if I could be moved to another seat. Tell him you just aren’t comfortable where you sit and would like to sit someplace else in a different part of the room. If that works, watch and see if he starts looking at the person who is sitting where you used to sit.
It’s a hard thing to ask a school counselor about this kind of thing, I know, but if you have one you like, you could try. It’s often really easy for adults to tell kids they are imagining something like this and that wouldn’t help you at all.
Talk with your mom and see if she has any ideas about how to get you out of a situation that is making you uncomfortable and distracting you from your work. She might be able to get you changed to another teacher without having to say why.
You are doing the best thing possible when you ignore him. Keep it up. You are coming down to the finish line on this term and will soon be out of there. If nothing else works, keep reminding yourself of that. Blessings, Luise
