Mice Have Invaded My Stored RV
Question: Dear Luise: Mice have invaded my stored RV. I have it in a Camping Club. Last year, I didn’t go out very often because I haven’t been well. When I checked it last week, I have signs of mice everywhere. It’s not a new rig but I have had it there for years and have never had mice. I don’t know what to do about it. I went to the store and there are all kinds of ways to get them but I don’t know if any of them work. I can’t put traps in there because I don’t get out there often enough to keep them emptied. Have you had any problem with mice? I read your article about your RV squirrel invasion but this is really quite different. Thanks for any advice you can offer. Ted
Answer: Dear Ted: Pesky little critters aren’t they. And, to me at least, so cute!
OK…there are pros and cons about using Decon. They can get into the walls or under your floors where they die and you can’t remove them. I use it initially and just hope for the best. Then I go to other means when I have it under control. They love an abandoned place, there’s not doubt about that.
I would try buying some of the high frequency deterrents you plug in the wall and put one in each room. They have worked very well for others but, so far, not for me. I have no idea why that is. Leave a radio on, as loud as you can without bothering others. If you can’t do the upkeep on traps, there are enclosed, disposable ones that trap a mouse and can be thrown away. They’re for after the problem is under control.
Make sure you don’t leave any food available and put your paper goods like toilet paper, paper towels and tissues in the fridge where they can’t get to it for nest building. Take your bedding and clothing home until you are ready to use your rig again. Put food staples in covered, metal containers.
Ask the park management if they know of anyone who can check your trailer out for entry points and plug them for you if you’re not up to it. Also, get someone to clean your place out completely using Pine-Sol liberally on all surfaces, (including the insides of drawers and cabinets.) Have them wash your dishes, pans and silver and put them in the fridge, too.
All of this will make your RV much less appealing to these tiny squatters in the future. Mice invading a stored RV is a very common problem but if you approach it aggressively, there’s hope. Blessings, Luise
