Question: Dear Luise: Have you ever compared a naturopath and a chiropractor and an M.D.? I have some kind of intestinal problem that is getting the better of me. I have two grown children who are being very verbal about where I should go. One is totally in favor of conventional Western medicine and the other is just as adamant about Eastern medicine. I don’t feel like I can afford to please them both and I honestly don’t know which way to turn. I am seldom sick but when I need my annual physical, I go to a Western doctor because that’s what my insurance covers. I’m trying to diplomatic but I don’t see any way out of this one. Thanks, Jo
Answer: Dear Jo: First of all, I want to tell you that I am biased toward Western medicine. I’m a nurse and I was raised in that discipline. However, I want to add that I have come to believe that there are many ways to “skin a cat”. The fact that I don’t know about something and have no experience with it… doesn’t make it wrong. (Huge discovery.)
Usually the “either/or” school of thought leaves something to be desired. I would suggest that you go to your regular doctor and see what he has to say about the problem and then find a good naturopath and take a look at the other side of the coin. If your insurance pays for one, could you pay for the other? Then, I would independently decide what I wanted to do regarding the recommendations offered. A combination of both might be the best resolution and bring about the quickest opportunity to heal.
Why not thank your kids for their concern and let them know that you are going to see a naturopath, following up with a chiropractor only if one is recommended, and then you are going to see your M.D. Afterwards, you could share the combined results with them and everyone would have a chance to look at the overview…knowing that the final choices are yours.
