Exercises for The Wheelchair Bound
Question: Dear Luise: Do you know anything about exercises for the wheelchair bound? I don’t yet live in a Senior Retirement Community like you do, so I need to find a way to get back into shape on my own. I’m sure you’ve seen those senior scooters. That’s how I get around since I broke my hip. Do you have any idea where I could find out about exercises that I could do to get back into shape as much as possible? I’m on Medicaid. I don’t feel that I am seen as someone who can improve her condition. I know that they are overworked and understaffed but I’m not going to give up on myself just because they have. Is there anything that is done for those in your community that use elderly scooters for mobility? Thanks so much, Marsha
Answer: Dear Marsha: I’m so impressed by your spirit. I know a lot of seniors that are still ambulatory that don’t have your spunk! I hope you can get into a Senior Retirement Community soon. Ours takes people on Medicaid. See what you can do.
Until then, I suggest that you get started with your own program of Sit Aerobics. Go to: http://www.collagevideo.com/in-stock-videos/2770.htm and look at the $16.95 videos available there. Some are focused on stroke patients and some are for people who have COPD, (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), but anything is a whole lot better than nothing!
We have a program here where a volunteer resident leads those who are unable to do regular aerobics in a program where they don’t leave their wheelchairs and scooters. I’m sure you could duplicate it at home on your own.
I want to say again, “good for you” for not giving up on yourself! People who can’t walk can still lead active, healthy lives. Attitude is everything. So, go for it! Exercises for the wheelchair bound are available and very effective when someone has the determination that you do. Blessings, Luise
