What’s The Scoop On Tego Hearing Aids
Question: Dear Luise: I’m grateful you are addressing this issue because I want to ask if you know anything about Tego Hearing Aids. I have a friend who has them and is very satisfied. However they cost quite a bit. I’m thinking about buying just one. Does that make sense? And I’m also wondering about how to buy a discount hearing aid for less online. Do you know of anyone who has done that? If so, how did it go? I can get one for $349. or a pair for $659., from www.Naturear.com , if I go that route. Why is there such a difference in prices? I don’t want to spend any more money than necessary because I’m not loaded, but I don’t want to be a skinflint and suffer for it either. Thanks, Tom
Answer: Dear Tom: It’s the same ole same ole; why does a BMW cost more than a Ford Focus? Some cheap hearing aids, like the Naturear, are one-size-fits-all. They may work for you and if not, I think you have a 30 day money-back guarantee. They are a combination of an analog hearing aid and digital, as I understand it.
If you want something more sophisticated, you’re going to have to pay for it. Tego Hearing Aids by Oticon are made by Phonak…a very well respected, Swiss manufacturer. They are low-end digitals. I have mid-range digitals made by Siemens and my husband has high-end digitals from Phonak because his hearing loss is profound.
You can make some hearing aid comparisons by going to www.ahearingaid.com . I found it useful to compare features. They also have a very good Frequently Asked Questions link. We’re all so different. Some people are completely satisfied with just getting greater amplification, while others want and/or need multiple adjustments to allow for maximum speech understanding and background noise suppression.
You can go to almost any audiologist and get a free hearing test. That way you will know where your loss is greatest, in the lower or higher tones and if you are having trouble with consonants and speech recognition. Keep your resistance up and don’t buy unless you want to. Ask for a copy of the test. Shop around, if that would make you feel better. Sometimes you can get a real deal on an “almost new” set…my husband just did. And yes, two hearing aids often work better than one.
Since your friend has had good results with Tego Hearing Aids, ask him in more detail what he likes about them and why? If he has a copy of his hearing test, perhaps you’d like to compare his loss with yours. As far as I know, all reputable audiologists and hearing aid websites offer a trial period…so if I were you, I would do some serious research and then give it a try. Nothing ventured/nothing gained.
