Do Healthy Dog Biscuits Stop Bad Breath

Category: Pets

Question: Hi There Luise: I have a wonderful, fuzzy mutt with “doggie breath” and I have heard that I could get him some healthy dog biscuits that might help his digestion. Is poor digestion what causes this problem? Do you have any ideas on how to help my Micki get over this common malady? Thanks, Bonnie

Answer: Dear Bonnie: Aren’t our four-footed angels something? But I agree with you, sometimes their breath can knock us over!

Yes, healthy dog biscuits can help clean the tarter off your pup’s teeth but they don’t usually aid in digestion. Actually, poor digestion is not where most of foul “doggie breath” comes from. Tarter promotes the growth of bacteria, as I understand it. Then, in pets as well as humans, periodontal disease follows. That’s where the nasty smell comes from.

The way to treat this is to go to www.oxyfreshww.com and look under “Products” and then “Pet Care”. They sell Pet Oral Hygiene Solution with Oxygene in it. Just a cap full used regularly in your pet’s drinking water will not only handle the odor but will promote healthier gums.

You can also make your own healthy dog biscuits! Combine 1 ½ C water, ½ C Safflower oil, (no substitutes), two eggs, 3 TB Scudder Creamy peanut butter, (no sugar), 2 ts vanilla, 1 ½ C whole wheat flour, ¼ C unbleached white flour, ½ C cornmeal, ½ C rolled oats, as follows: mix water, oil, eggs, peanut butter and vanilla with a wire whisk. Add flours, cornmeal and oats by combining with a mixer. Take 1/3 of the dough and place on a floured surface. Flour it and gently knead. Add more flour as necessary to form a pliable dough. Roll out in ½ - ¾ inch thickness and cut into whatever size you need. Repeat until all dough is used. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 400 F, 20 – 25 minutes, depending on thickness. Leave in oven 20 minutes after turning oven off to crisp. Store airtight. Blessings, Luise
