How Can I Save My Aging Toyota Sunrader Motorhome

Question: Hi Luise: I’m having some trouble with the wiring in my older, (1990), Toyota Sunrader motorhome. I love this vehicle. It has been like a member of my family. It is also getting a little rust. I hate letting it go. I have not found another vehicle like it. I know you had one that you loved, too. Do you have any suggestions? Should I fix it, or do you know of another vehicle that I would love as much? Thank you, Martha

Answer: Dear Martha: Yes, we can sure love the old and the familiar, can’t we? I always give my RVs a name and get kidded about it. But they actually became dear, dear friends to me.

When you own an aging RV you either need a lot of luck, inside storage or an on-site handyman. All three would be great! It sounds like you are not going to be able to skate by on luck since you already see definite signs of aging. And I’m sure the rust comes from not having inside storage. So…do you have someone who can redo your wiring and fight the good fight with rust for free? I have found it totally impractical to hire on-going maintenance for an old RV, unless you have unlimited funds. If you do, go for it!

Another thing you might do is to replace it with a similar model that has had the benefit of inside storage. Look on the web, and see what’s out there. Any 1990 Toyota Sunraders in cherry condition? Can you afford one? If so, you will have to create inside storage from now on. It just goes with the territory when you have a geriatric RV.

I agree with you that certain rigs just fit. My 1971 Argosy Airstream is my “baby”. I keep it in the Port Susan Camping Club and I love using it there. It’s my own, personal retreat. When I was on the road, it was my Toyota Sunrader motorhome. Some marriages, (and purchases), are made in heaven! Blessings, Luise

I would be happy to take a look at your Sunrader. These older models to develop some issues, as we all do! I have one, as well, and may be able to help! Can you be more specific as to the problem?

Does the BMW Rider or any other reader still have the Sunrader RV for sale. If so what part of the country is the seller in? And, is it a V6 or the 4 cylinder?
Thanks, John

Looking for parts for my aging 21′ 1989 Toyota Dolphin in Southern California. A drunk driver hit and took out the rear shower and damage in water heater area just before Christmas. He has no insurance, so I’m on my own. Ideal would be someone to fix it reasonably or info from one who has done this type of endeavor.

I have a 1990 Toyota Sunrader Classic that was built in Vallejo, CA. I have had it 5 years and I have had lots of fun in it. I took it into the mechanic that rebuilt the engine for me for an oil change. When he tried to get it off of the rack, it wouldn’t start. Three parts later, it runs great. However, the brakes are now mushy. Wasn’t when I took it in and the steering is making a noise. It is still there. I sure miss her. Mine has the name of Matildaruu. Matilda is a family name that I like and ruu is for Roo in Winnie the Pooh. Not much to look at, but a beauty inside!

Hello out there,

Am in the market for a small Sunrader … does anyone know if the shorter ones … 17/18 feet, were made in the early 90’s?? We have a wonderful 1989 Lazy Daze but want to sell it or trade for a short Sunrader. Thanks for any help out there.

Answer: Dear Lew: Your question is too technical for me. I think you would probably need a one ton chassis for such a project. that’s what I had…but you need to talk to someone who knows a lot more about it.Try http://www.coachrepair.com and

My name is Bill,
I purchased a 1990 Sunrader about a year ago. It’s a wonderful camper and I plan to get the use out of it. It was in pretty good shape other than the cracked wrap around windows. I spent alot of time trying to locate replacement windows with no success. I ended up fabricating a mold to heat and shape an 1/8″ acrylic. For me It’s a little late, but is there an after market window out there for this camper?

I own 83 Sunrader since 2001, Its really great. Got hit head on last year, replaced all front end parts myself including hood, lights, bumper, fender and I found used power stering parts at wrecking yard, also received $4,000 from insurance co. This spring was rear ended in San Diego, so I replaced bumper, rear lights and re did all fiberglass on rear myself[I was a boat builder] and received another $4,500. Life is good, going up west coast for 6 months for to surf and play and some work.I’m 64 and living more & more.

From Mike:
I bought a 1988 (21 ft) Sunrader last Summer. It is in Great shape with 60000 miles, but many new items. However, it needs the air conditioner control panel replaced for the roof A/C and these are no longer produced. Any idea on where to find or an alternative? Also, I paid $7400 for mine does that sound like a decent price?

I’m a widow, age 70, not in too good condition. Would love to have a Sunrader to enjoy time left. Don’t know anything about mechanics or fixing things too well. Have a 1989 pickup truck that would love to be able to trade if Sunrader is in good condition. Truck is great condition. Don’t have a lot of money. Husband canceled all insurance before he died. If anyone is interested out there, would love to hear from them. Thanks for the great site. You do good work! You please contact me if you get anyone interested in working with me. Thanks again.

I have just bought a 1983 Sunrader with only 40 K miles on it. I am looking for owners manual for it. We need to check out all the systems, water & gas and it would be a great help to have some technical info on it. It is 4 cylinder with rear dinette & passenger side door floor plan. We drove it from Texas Panhandle to New Orleans through a bad wind storm and she drove like a dream hit 75 withno problems and got 24 + mpg when we had no head wind. I really like this old gal a lot! Also I am having a electrical issue with the battery light and the sensor light coming on. It is in the shop for a ignition system check up but really need to get this resolve need to use it by 9/5 for a short trip…any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. D.

I am looking to get my 1st motorhome, what I ideally would like is a 1990’s Sunrader, 6 cylinder, automatic with cruise control. And the type with the door in the rear. I have a number of ideas of how I want to re-do the inside, so the condition wouldn’t have to be perfect.
Any out there? Please let me know at; randyzxc@att.net.
Thanks;
Randy
