Is A Breckenridge Park Model RV A Wise Choice
Question: Dear Luise: We have seen a Breckenridge park model RV we like and would appreciate any feedback you might have on them. We previously asked about camping clubs in connection with care for the elderly. Both of us want to thank you for your comprehensive and very helpful reply. Now, we would like to pursue your suggestion that we choose a park model RV to give us more room for “stationary camping”. Have you had any experience owning park models? What are the pros and cons you are aware of? Fritz and Paula
Answer: Dear Fritz and Paula: It’s nice to know that you could use the data I published for you about camping clubs and elderly care issues? Since you said you were selling your Monaco motorhome, I volunteered the suggestion about park models. A lot of “pros” follow. The only “cons” I know of are they are stationary RVs and often have very small hot water heaters.
The biggest “pros” are the fact that park models cost less and are bigger. It doesn’t get much better than that in my book! The reason being they are built for permanent placement, not for the open road. All of the very expensive materials to lighten the weight of road models can be by-passed in the construction of park model RVs. Also, there are no costly two-way and three-way appliances, and no holding tanks. Plumbing and electrical fixtures and hook-ups are residential style. The list goes on and on.
The reason they can be bigger is they don’t have to meet normal road-travel requirements. In some places, park models that are 12 feet wide have to have pilot cars fore and aft when they are on the road and sometimes they can only be delivered during low-traffic hours, with a permit required. Dealers know the details and deliver them with special trucks.
What all of this offers you is more of a look and feel of a home. I have owned two park model RVs and both suited my needs perfectly. They are not mobile homes. Mobile homes are not allowed in camping clubs. Also, mobile home parks and camping clubs are very different. I would suggest you check out both while you are shopping. By and large, camping clubs are less costly and so are park model RVs, but not always. The major benefits mobile homes offer are their increased size and a twelve-month residency.
Often camping clubs offer more, socially, and are more rustic and remote. Now is the time to investigate to your heart’s content so you will be happy with your choice. I highly recommend both the Breckenridge and the Blue Water park model RVs but there are other makes available with excellent reputations. Blessings, Luise
