Used Beaven Motorhomes Can’t Drive Themselves. What Then?
Question: Dear Luise: I know used Beaver motorhomes are superior because I have one, but I wonder what comes after that? I don’t know if you will want to deal with the question that’s bothering me about full-time RVing. It’s not a very “up” subject, but I’ll just send it along anyway. I’m worried about what happens when I can’t drive any longer, and have no home to return to. I have no family and very limited funds. The whole idea of economical travel is great for now but what happens later? I’ve worked at jobs that never paid a lot and so my Social Security isn’t huge. My savings aren’t either. I’m a backyard mechanic so I can make do with used motorhome parts to help keep my overhead pretty low but the future looks bleak…long range. Any ideas? Bill
Answer: Dear Bill: Well, first of all, good for you for thinking about the future and not just expecting it to take care of itself. And congrats on your Beaver. I really like them, and have found that most mechanics do, too.
OK, so it’s a touchy subject. So what? None of us is going to be able to keep driving indefinitely, so we might just as well call a spade a spade. We need to look at what we have, whom we know, and where we’re coming from to be as realistic as possible.
In the full-time RVing world, what you’re describing is called “hanging up your keys”. For many people, this is a two-stage process. First, you need a “home base” if you’re no longer driving but able to take care of yourself, and then, if you hang around long enough, you may not be able to take care of yourself, eventually.
My suggestion is that you investigate the Escapees Club at www.escapees.com and seriously consider joining it to create a support system and extended family. Ask for information about their park system and how to find a permanent lot for a home base, and then look into Escapee CARE, Inc. which is a unique and phenomenal way to use your own RV as your nursing home and receive three meals a day and wonderful care. Now’s the time to get all of your ducks in a row…when you don’t need any of these things!
