Senior RVer Seeking Advice On Small Campers
Question: Dear Luise: I am woman in my sixties ready to hit the open road. I’ve been following your articles with interest but have seen no mention of small campers. Why is that? It looks to me from my research that the blue book value of a camper hold its own. I presently drive a very powerful pickup and would rather not have to sell it and graduate into a motor home. I wouldn’t have to tow a “second car”. What’s wrong with my thinking? I appreciate your Senior RV Camping advice! Lois
Answer: Dear Lois: Thanks for raising this question. I have owned two pickup campers but I never became adept at loading and unloading them. That doesn’t mean you can’t!
Pickup truck campers have come a long way where amenities are concerned. However, you are never going to have the living space that other RVs offer. Even a large one has definite limits. That said, you’re right, your need for a second vehicle would be met. It’s certainly true that motor homes are not very handy when you need to run to the store for a loaf of bread.
If pulling a regular trailer or fifth wheel doesn’t appeal to you then you may be on the right track. I know that they can present problems to those of use who have not mastered backing them up. Why not try out the different campers for trucks by checking out RV camper rentals? It’s an economical way to further your research.
If you find you’re interested, I would recommend the Lance Lite 815. You can see it at www.lancecamper.com . That model is 8’ 6” long and fits a long bed or it can be modified for a short bed. They have many wonderful features like wet showers that drain into the black tank and comfortable, queen-sized RV mattresses!
There’s a good reason there are a lot of small campers on the road! Find the right one and it may work really well for you. Blessings, Luise
