Question: Dear Luise: My husband and I are thinking of leaving the winter behind next year and trying Arizona RV camping. It seems like it would be fun for a while, but I am wondering, does the fun wear off after a few weeks? Does not having the luxuries found in a home leave one feeling deprived? Also, are RV generators really that dependable? I have a fear of getting stranded some where in the middle of the desert with no power! Do you have any suggestions on how to double check a generator to make sure it is working well? And is there any kind of insurance to cover you if you get stranded? Maybe I am just worrying too much, by my husband is so relaxed about it all. I like that I can discuss my fears women-to-women, because my concerns aren’t my husbands. Answer: Dear Frances: We do tend to worry about different things, don’t we? What does your laid-back guy worry about…TV reception and your popcorn supply? (Just kidding.)
Check the web for Arizona RV parks. Some have many activities available so you don’t get bored. I would suggest you start out in an environment that gives you lots of options and see how that feels. And some RVs are pretty luxurious! Don’t knock it ‘til you try it. OK?
If you don’t have one yet, I recommend you research RV generators at www.onan.com . Onan has a very fine reputation and makes some of the quietest models on the market. You can have them installed so they can be turned on from inside your RV. Checking your generator out without having to leave your RV is great! Also, for auxiliary power, solar panels can make a big difference in an Arizona RV.
Two things come to mind about getting stranded. One is to have two vehicles. RVers often tow a car, or one spouse handles the rig and the other follows in the car. This increases safety on the road and allows you more freedom when you reach your destination. Also, always carry a cell phone. Very good insurance is available through the Good Sam Club for emergency roadside service for RVs. They are at www.goodsamclub.com .
