What’s Up With My Future Mother in Law?

Question: Dear Luise: What is the customary greeting from a fiancé’s mother to the bride-to-be upon engagement? My future mother in law gave me a hug and told me “good job!” upon learning of my engagement to his son. I have been since bothered by it. Is this customary? I just kept quiet because she may just be unaware it comes across as insulting and demeaning. Or perhaps she is oblivious that I might not even catch it? M.

Answer: Dear M.: As far as I know, the customary response is “Congratulations!” And maybe, “Welcome to the family.”

Good for you for not saying anything. It came with a hug. That’s something.

Please bring your question over to my Web-forum: www.WiseWomenUnite.com . You may get some clarification there. Off the top of my head…I would say the lady has poor manners. Let’s hope it’s nothing more ominous than that. Blessings, Luise

Born in 1927, the miles in between her teens and theirs have been full of falling and getting up, learning and growing and then falling and getting up again. A normal, though not simple, process. She has had diverse careers in nursing, teaching preschool, interior design, Real Estate sales, insurance adjusting and dairy herd testing. She’s lived in the Mid-west, South and West Coast. Luise is married to the love of her life, Val, born in 1911. Their little terrier, “Rosa,” makes most of the major decisions at their house, (or thinks she does).
