I Hate My Gym Teacher
Question: Dear Luise: I’m still in grade school and it is really hard for me because I really hate my gym teacher. I dread going back to school because we get her every year. She has favorites, and of course it’s the kids that are good at sports. I’m not. I like sports but I’m not very good at them. This teacher looks more like man than a woman and I think she dislikes me as much as I dislike her. Last year she was blabbing away at us and I just gave her a really mean stare. She sent me to the principal’s office. For a look! The principal said I had an attitude and I said “well, duh!” She called my Mom, who doesn’t really give a rip. This is so unfair! Shandra
Answer: Dear Shandra: You bet it is! Unfair, I mean. You know darn well that there are kids who like this teacher. She’s just not your cup of tea and visa versa. I can see why you gave her the evil eye since no one seems to care much about how you feel, but was it smart? Really?
Here’s the scoop. You are going to be meeting and having to work with people you don’t like on and off for the rest of your life, so you might just as well start building some skills regarding how to cope with them. High on the list is to try to ignore those that you wouldn’t have hand picked to be in your life. I’m not suggesting you pretend you like them, but you’ve got to learn to get along while keeping as much distance as possible.
This gym teacher is in a power position. Taking her on was dumb. You will meet other teachers and later on bosses that you don’t like. Life is like that. It’s OK to feel upset about it and to even feel sorry for your self. But as soon as you can, move on to more interesting subjects and pursuits. Don’t get stuck there. Blessings, Luise
